What the hell is she doing here?

Ok, here's my first article. I don't like to write, actually that's only because the only moments I wrote in my life was for school. So be aware, I'm not a writer! But I'm sure I'm gonna enjoy this... Hi, I'm Anissa and as you may know I'm from France.
We're here for three weeks now; we live in a big house with 4 and more people. Ok, I will put you in the context. I'm 21, I just finished my studies, never been away from home for so long and all alone, never had to live with anyone else than my relatives, never really enjoyed adventure and used to have my comfort, my own bubble if you prefer. (Uuh she's just a little girl).
Liepaja beach
Maybe you're right. I don't really know how to answer when people ask me the reason I committed myself in this project. Maybe I just needed this time off in my life before even thinking about settling down, I definitely also needed a time off for my personal issues. My aims here are to improve my social competences, my patience and give me some ideas for my future plans.  I want to get to know another country and culture, meet new people and above all get to know myself better.
Why Latvia? Maybe because I don't know a damn THING about the country or its culture. Now I'm here, I have no idea why it's so unknown. Compared to where I'm from, it's so… peaceful, quiet, nothing goes fast. People make time to do what they want to do. I mean, anyone who has a breakdown should come by for a few days.

Kurava, Kuldiga
I'm sad to tell you I have nothing much to tell about these lasts days. Been sick most of them, yep, my body is still not a friend with the country. But spring is coming so... So far, I had the chance to go to Kuldiga for our first weekend here. All I can say is that you very quickly feel like you're at home, hanging out with friends you seem to know for years. That's a weird feeling. These last 3 weeks ran so fast, although, it seems like I'm here for months now. I'm more an observer than a talker or an actor, but still I'm getting used to everything and everyone. Ok, I'm not going to lie to you; I miss home, the crowd, the fast life, my people. But I was "prepared" for that and maybe that's what I needed – to miss my life. But I'm surprised to get used to this life sooo fast. I'm meeting, like every day, new visions of life, new mind-sets. I'm feeling like I'm so far from everyone and I realize I have so much to learn about others and myself!

Ok that's it for now. To be continued.

Bet vienu dienu kāds draugs man internetā parādīja Boltik Baik projektu, un es uzreiz sapratu, ka man tur jāpiedalās.

Tam seko atmošanās, piedzimšana no jauna.

Screw the Hobit, this is my Unexpected Journey

Dimzeni farm

I never thought of becoming a volunteer. I didn’t even agree with the concept. Normally it is just a white rich kid’s wet dream of helping the poor little children and then comeback to their home country and everything’s the same. But one day a friend of mine sent me the link to the Boltik Baik project, and I immediately knew that I need to do it. At the base it’s the combination of two of my favourite things, video and bicycles; it’s an opportunity to live abroad for the first time, and to get out of Lisbon’s routine. What could be bad? And even the bad things will be great for me, I thought.
So when I knew I was accepted I didn’t know much. I’m going to Latvia, to the north, to a coast city called Liepaja, to work with bicycles and video, I kept saying to people around me. I only found out where Latvia was in the map two days before coming to advance planning visit. So here I went to the plane thinking I would stay in the city and probably travel by myself. I didn’t have expectations and I didn’t have a goal. I just went.
The sauna in Dimzeni

And two weeks later none of that it’s true. Yes, at the superficial this is a project about bikes and video, but it’s so much more than that. It’s about renovating a workshop from scratch and getting your hand dirty. It’s about getting to know Latvia and it’s customs and rituals. I mean, in the last two weeks I saw fish jumping Europe’s widest waterfall, I saw snow suddenly falling when an incredible woman starts to sing a bird calling Easter song, I sent all my bad soul stuff to the river and I think it’s actually working – and I’m a sceptical-not-fond-of-esoteric-stuff monster. And I went to sauna for the first time in my life in a more than 100 year’s old wooden building and jumped in a freezing river afterwards. It was so intense! Sauna is a 90º homoerotic masochist therapy that cleans you on the inside, on the outside and your brain – or soul if you prefer. Really! I never thought it could be so great. I was just screaming of pleasure.
Svete river
And jumping in the river? A powerful drug. When you jump you feel a shock followed by an awakening, a new birth. When I got out of the water I was dizzy for a while and then all the strong feelings started to kick in. I felt like I was super concentrated and full of energy with a wow-feeling about everything. The nature, the trees, the people with me… everything’s so beautiful! And then I went inside, warmed up again, had a bath, and went to have dinner, and I just felt sooo clean and relaxed. I can’t believe there are so many people – like I was before – who never tried, and probably never will, sauna and jumping in a freezing river.
To all of you my fellow friends I say: I feel sorry for you! I’m a lucky southern bastard.

I’m so glad I really came to Latvia. I just hope that I can come back also after the project.

Es nevarēju iedomāties

Noslēpusies aiz mākoņiem, saule noriet Baltijas jūrā un Liepājā. Lidinās vientuļas kaijas. Perfekto horizonta līniju tālumā sarausta kuģi. Strīpainas debesis rozā un violetos toņos pār mani. Sudraba smiltis.
Man līdzi ir mūzika, bet šoreiz es to atstāju kabatā.

Mēģināšu šo visu pārtulkot vārdos un pārvērst to .doc failā. Cerams, izdosies.
Tādēļ pasakiet man, kur ir loģika?

Man tikko prātā ienāca Kastaņedas vārdi: „Izdzēs savu pagātni!”, aizmirsti, kas tu biji līdz šim... tu esi no jauna dzimis bērns. Neuztraucies. Nebaidies. Neļauj savai dvēselei būt iesprūdušai laikā un vietā. Es tikai gribu braukt ar savu ričuku it kā es būtu kaija – nekādu robežu, mani vada tikai horizonts.
Labi, aizgāju romantismā. Zinu. Piedodiet. Vainojiet saulrietu. Debesis tagad deg, un tas rozā un tas violetais pārvēršas psihodēliskos toņos. Jūra izskatās patiešām burvīga un hipnotizējoša. Viens vienīgs mirklis un... parādās pirmā zvaigzne. Kļūst tumšs, pudele ir tukša. Sauc izsalkums.

Shuffle surprising no-expectations mode: ON

Hidden by clouds the sun is setting down on the Baltic sea and Liepaja. Lonely seagulls flying. The perfect line of the horizon is broken by far away ships. A striped sky in pink and violet shades above me. Silver sand. Beer and cigarette. Paper and ink. The little green bike. It feels simply great. I haven’t even opened the beer yet that I feel already happily drunk.
I have my music but this time I leave it in the pocket. The symphony of these thousands waves sounds so much cooler.

Eastern is gone, it’s just a week we’re here but it feels definitely longer. A tricky spring seems to have fun making us wait. I don’t mind. Until the sun paints the sky as it’s doing now, I won’t mind. I feel blessed enough to forget about my frozen fingers.
Well, that’s supposed to be a blog. Ok, usually I do prefer images and pictures or videos to express myself and I’m really not good with sharing words and this kind of stuff but I’ll try. Tonight I don’t have any recording device with me but my eyes and my right hand. I’ll try to translate it into words and convert this into a .doc file. Hope it’s gonna be enough.
Sooo… I was often asked about my expectations here but once again I have to admit my limits and… hey folks, I don’t really like expectations and basically I came here naked and empty. So I’ll make a step out of them.
Shuffle surprising no-expectations mode: ON.

I didn’t expect to find such wildness here. All this magic and powerful beauty.
I didn’t expect such a starry bright sky. That’s the best I’ve ever seen.
I couldn’t expect to enjoy so much a cold rain during a bike ride.
I couldn’t expect to feel that happy to have my face beaten by a frozen wind. Ride against it and then even win it!
I couldn’t expect to feel at home since the beginning in a place so different from what I used to call “home”! Shit, I live in Sicily and even if I wasn’t born there, that’s the very first place I felt as “home”.  I do love any kind of “south”. So what’s the point in this? I’ve never been so North before.
I couldn’t expect that I will actually feel like living on the sea as I do now. And back in Italy I live on an island! My city is on the sea, but I can’t even see it! I definitely couldn’t expect to find myself preferring the Baltic to the Mediterranean. Never. But here I am.

I didn’t expect to feel so glad and light not to have a return ticket because I know that this experience will go further than joining Boltik Baik Project.
For the very first time I’m surrounded by people who cannot start the day without welcoming it jumping on their bike and bring it for a morning ride. Not to have a driving license is not anymore a problem as it is in my home country.

It’s just the beginning and I know many things, thoughts and feelings will change but I’m definitely ready to accept them. For the last years of my life I used to invest time and energies in building up something that usually you can call “career”, but at least once a year I was breaking down and escaping from it but then returning back on my steps. So basically in the end I wasn’t building up anything and I wasn’t also travelling and experimenting as I wanted. Well done Giulia. But just few days here were enough to put everything in perspective, seriously, and open a huuuge window on other paths. Can you imagine how much brain-space you save if you don’t have to worry about stuff like: do not piss off your householder that wants your money; avoid the bills that are lying covered by dust on the shelf; fill the empty crying fridge; frustrate yourself waking up every morning working for someone else’s idea that you actually dislike. Honestly, it feels so amazing to have the chance to reinvent yourself, giving space to your deepest dreams, inspiration and creativity beyond any kind of certainties. Just crash them into thousand little broken pieces and let the Baltic wind blow them away. Forget them. Some Castaneda’s words came back into my mind now… “Erase your past”, forget what you were and used to be… you’re a new born child. Do not worry. Do not fear. Do not let your soul be stuck in time and space. I just wanna ride my bike as if I were a seagull. No borders, just the horizon leading me.
Ok, I fell into romanticism. I know. Forgive me. Blame the sunset. Sky now is burning and that pink and violet is turning into fluo-psychedelic shades. The seascape looks absolutely wonderful and hypnotizing. It’s just a moment and… the first star appears. It’s getting dark, the beer is finished. Hunger calls. Fire needs to be lighted.

Ah! One last thing. The most important and probably the most trivial and banal but true as hell: thanks to Stas, Agata, Linda, Anna, Asnate and whoever else made this moment possible for me.

Brīvprātīgie ir klāt!

Jau nedēļu Liepājas ielās var sastapt jaunos Boltik Baik 2015 brīvprātīgos. Laipni lūgti iepazīties: šeit ir viņu pārdomas pirms ierašanās projektā.

Sveiki!

Welcome the volunteers!

All of the volunteers are here, alive and discovering.

Hello! Olá! My name is João but you can call me Queijo (Cheese).
I am from Lisboa.
When I go to Liepaja you can expect me to smile and try to make you laugh (poorly). But you will never see me sad.
And, if you ask me really nicely, I can cook and teach you about my language and country.
I can even teach you about my country, how it is badly governed and how to make cool videos .
I am really looking forward to go to Latvia, but I am a bit afraid of the cold and not being able to swim in the beach (because of the cold temperatures).
After two month stay in Liepaja surely I will understand reasonably your language and your costumes, have a lot of saudades (the only word in every language for missing someone), and take some cooking recipes to share in my work.
See you all soon and keep in mind you'll have to deal with me for two months. Abreijos (“hugs and kisses”)!

Hello! Bonjour! My name is Anissa but you can call me Ani.
I am from Nice, in south of France.
When I go to Liepaja you can expect me to look everywhere all the time.
But you will never see me down (I hope).
And, if you ask me really nicely, I can cook for you.
I can even teach you how to speak French.
I am really looking forward to go to Latvia, but I am a bit afraid of the weather and to live with people I don’t know.
After two month stay in Liepaja surely I’ll know what are my limits are.
See you all soon and  can’t wait to meet you :)

Hello! CIAO! My name is GIULIA but you can call me as it sounds better in your own language. Feel free to re-baptize me! I will love it.
I am from Italy. I was born in the North but I belong to the South. Deep South. A beautiful land called Sicily.
When I go to Liepaja you can expect me to laugh and smile a lot, organize massive dinners and cook cook cook, wake up early to enjoy the very first sun, have a swim in the Baltic Sea, get my hands as dirty as I can, take you for a bike ride every time that is possible and ask you to sing loud (LOUD!) with me, collect seeds and plant them, interview you, take photos and videos till I have enough battery, learn as much as possible to bring back to Palermo a good experience and be able to share new skills and knowledge.
But you will never see me waste something. Or play an instrument in the right way (but be sure there will be love in that horrible noise).
And, if you ask me really nicely, I can cook some good authentic Italian dishes, baby-sitting for your kids, write you a story, read you a book and of course fix your bike (once I become enough good to do it)!
I can even teach you how to be magic in a kitchen! Cook something with (almost) nothing and play with flour and water to create whatever you wish (and then eat it!).
I am really looking forward to go to Latvia, but I am a bit afraid of leave my bike alone in Palermo!
After two month stay in Liepaja surely I will be able to fix my bike and others'. I hope I will be able to design and build up my own one and maybe come back home riding it. Speak a new language (or try my best to pretend I can actually speak Latvian).
See you all soon and thanks Universe for this project!

Hello! My name is Tamás but you can call me Tomi.
I am from Hungary.
When I go to Liepaja you can expect me to be friendly and reliable. But you will never see me lazy and unreliable.
